SCE encourages you to read the general electrical safety tips below and share them with family and friends:

Never touch a power line — even one that is on the ground. Consider even downed wires to be charged with electrical current or “live”. If you see a downed power line, call SCE’s 24-hour emergency number, 909-404-8259, immediately. Visit Power Line Safety for more important information.
If you live in an area with underground electric lines, find out where the lines are located before you dig for any reason. Visit Call Before You Dig for more important information.
Replace or repair electrical appliances that are broken or have damaged wires or insulation. Damaged equipment or wires can give a powerful shock when touched. Review Indoor Safety for more tips.
Keep all electrical equipment on your property accessible at all times. If the equipment belongs to SCE, our employees may need to get to it quickly and safely in order to do their jobs. This is especially true during an emergency. Don’t climb on or try to repair any SCE equipment.
Before allowing utility employees into your home or business, request to see their Employee Identification cards to confirm their identity. SCE employees are required to carry picture identification cards with them. To learn more, see Identifying SCE Employees.
Keep your pets indoors if possible, or provide ample shade and lots of water.
Avoid driving in damaged areas. You might interfere with rescue or restoration efforts, as well as jeopardize your own safety because debris may hide downed lines during a wind or rain storm.

Easily Avoid Electrical Hazards By Following These Easy Tips

Place electrical cords out of the flow of traffic to avoid tripping.
Replace damaged or frayed cords to avoid fire hazards.
Be sure your light bulbs are of the correct type and wattage (if you do not know the correct wattage, use a bulb 60 Watts or less).
Replace a halogen torchiere floor lamp with one that uses energy-efficient bulbs. The halogen models burn at over 1,000 degrees, Fahrenheit, and can cause a fire if they come into contact with flammable materials.
Unplug small appliances when not in use.
Never reach into water to get an appliance that has fallen in without being sure the appliance is unplugged.
If you use a heating pad, turn it off before going to sleep.
Be sure that your electrical outlets and switches have cover plates to avoid being shocked by exposed wires.
Ensure that you can easily reach a light switch or lamp from your bed for night-time safety.
Be sure your garage, storage areas and stairs are well lit to avoid falling.
Have a battery-operated flashlight easily available at all times.
If you use an electric blanket, don’t cover it or “tuck” it in. Covering the blanket may cause excessive heat build-up.
Keep space heaters away from furniture and flammable materials such as curtains, rugs, or newspapers.
